TODAY’S FREE SHORT STORY:

The Sweetheart Tree by Rula Sinara

Environmental activist Serena Myss has a reputation for not shying away from difficult situations, yet memories of her brotherís death and Austinóthe man whoíd failed to save himóhave kept her from returning home for years. But when she hears that the tree she and Austin once carved their initials in and shared their first kiss under is getting cut down by Thanksgiving, she has a new fight on her hands. That oak and the fields around it are a centuries old wildlife habitat, but if she canít bring herself to admit that the tree and land arenít the only things worth fighting forÖshe stands to lose more than just memories.

For officer Austin Shale, building a teen center on the land behind his home isnít only about helping kids to stay out of troubleÖitís about clearing away the past and any reminders of the girl next dooróthe girl he thought heíd spend forever with. He refuses to survive another Thanksgiving with the pain of blame and heartbreak or looking out on the tree that reminds him of growing up with and falling for Serena Myss. The last thing he expects to be thankful for this year is finding her tied to their tree in protestÖand getting the chance to arrest her.

Guest Post by Rula Sinara

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Life is Beautiful”. It really is. Don’t get me wrong or think I’m naïve in that opinion. I’m not blind to the dark side (yes, I’m a Star Wars fan ;). I’m all too aware of the darker side of life…the pain, loss, greed or incomprehensible acts by people who have no respect for others or for life itself. But I’m an eternal optimist and, despite all the terrible things that go on in the world and all the personal struggles people experience, there is always something extraordinary and touching and phenomenally beautiful that also happens in our lives. I choose to be thankful for life’s gifts.

I’m also a firm believer that the more focus that’s placed on the good in life and the more good, peace and positivity each individual spreads, the less room there will be for the negative (channel your inner jedi!). Some of life’s most beautiful gifts are those of love, home, family and friends. When a person is lucky enough to have found their “inner circle”—their place of safety and unconditional love and support…whether it was the one they were born into or one they were simply destined and blessed to become a part of or a strength they’ve found in themselves—then they’ve found their happily ever after.

What I love about writing for Harlequin Heartwarming is that, although the stories in the line are fiction, they’re so true to real life that the pain, struggles and loss so many experience are as much a part of the characters’ journeys as they are ours. As a reader, I’m able to identify with characters throughout the line. Their journeys create awareness, touch the heart and open up new perspectives on similar “real life” experiences.

My Harlequin Heartwarming series, From Kenya, with Love, revolves around a growing circle of family and friends, brought together by life’s hurdles and destiny. From being torn apart in custody of an innocent child, to the merciless evils of elephant poaching, to coping with the death of a loved one…it’s all in The Promise of Rain, After the Silence, The Sweetheart Tree (Thanksgiving online short read) and the upcoming third book in the series, Through the Storm (tentative title). There’s no sugar coating in a Harlequin Heartwarming, yet there is always a happily ever after. The characters do find their inner circles…their family, friends, home and true love. It doesn’t matter if two people live on opposite sides of the world or if their lives seem impossible to merge because of inner conflicts, if they’re meant to touch each other’s lives, they’ll come together.

Life will make it happen, because life is beautiful.

Award winning and USA Today bestselling author Rula Sinara lives in Virginiaís countryside with her husband, three boys and zany but endearing pets. When she’s not writing or doing mom stuff, she loves organic gardening, attracting wildlife to her yard (cool bugs included) or watching romantic movies.
