Sixteen-year-old Annarenee Stevens is the sole member of her family without a super power. The only time she feels powerful is in the pool. With her sights set on swimming for U.C. Berkeley, she’s ready to win it all at the State championship and secure her future.
When the government unexpectedly ends the secret Genetically Enhanced Asset (GEA) program, Annarenee is uprooted from Dayton, the only home she's ever known, and relocated to San Diego with all of the other GEA families. Queen of her public school, Annarenee is just another zero at Superhero High, a school without any sports teams.
With the end of the program, her hero older brother now needs a college education, too, meaning the only way Annarenee is getting into Berkeley is on a scholarship. Her dream is slipping through her fingers, no matter how tightly she clings to it. To make matters worse, super hot superhero, Ren Gonzalez, is paying too much attention to her. The kind of attention that has Ren’s ex-girlfriend intent on making Annarenee’s life even more miserable.
But when heroes begin disappearing, zeros and heroes will be forced to team up in order to solve the mystery. If they don't kill each other first.
Annarenee Stevens is in a family full of superheroes with no powers of her own. She’s made her own path at her school as a swimming superstar with lots of friends. Her life is uprooted when her family has to move to California after the superhero program is shut down. She is devastated to leave her friends and swimming. When she gets to California superheroes start disappearing, she stops at nothing to find them when her brother becomes missing too. She stops at nothing to find them.
In an Oyster Shell – It was a good book with superheroes that could have had a stronger ending.
The Pearls – I love a good superhero book. What I like about this one is the main character does not have a traditional superpower. Annarenee is a strong character that stands up to the harassment that comes with being a “zero.” She surrounds herself with people who become great friends and are able to accomplish a lot together.
I liked the romance. I love her love interests power when they kiss he goes invisible. It was very unique and fun. I like that it was a clean romance, with strong morals. I liked that very much.
The mystery was intriguing. It kept leaving you wanting to turn the pages as fast as you could.
The Sand – The ending was not as satisfying as I would have liked it to be.
3.5 Pearls!
